VERMONT MEDICAL SOCIETY HONORS DR. JOHN C. LANTMAN WITH FOUNDERS’ AWARD

A Williston physician who treated patients in his home office for 15 years before starting the Thomas Chittenden Health Center has been posthumously presented the Vermont Medical Society’s 2003 Founders’ Award. The announcement was made at the 190th Annual Meeting of the Vermont Medical Society, held on Oct. 17-18 at the Woodstock Inn in Woodstock.

John C. Lantman, M.D., was president of the Vermont Medical Society from 1973 to 1974 and was a member of the society for 49 years. In 1985 he received the society’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Lantman was a graduate of the University of Vermont College of Medicine and was devoted to promoting good medical care for all Vermonters. He had a “typical country practice” in his home, said his wife Claire, where patients didn’t need to have an appointment and the doctor made many house calls.

As the community grew, Dr. Lantman founded the Thomas Chittenden Health Center in Williston in 1969, a community health center that was the first group practice in the state. While the clinic setting allowed physicians to see more patients, Dr. Lantman continued making house calls through the end of his career.

Dr. Lantman shared his experience and expertise with other physicians, both as a clinical professor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, and as a founding member of the Vermont Program for Quality in Health Care. He was also a charter member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Lantman was also honored by a memorial resolution passed by the American Medical Association’s House of Delegates at its annual meeting on June 18, 2003.

The Vermont Medical Society’s Founders’ Award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership, vision, and achievement in improving the health of Vermonters and all Americans.

The mission of the Vermont Medical Society is to serve the public by facilitating and enhancing physicians’ individual and collective commitments, capabilities and efforts to improve the quality of life for the people of Vermont through the provision of accessible and appropriate health care services.
