MONTPELIER –  For his untiring efforts to improve medical service and advance patient care, the Vermont Medical Society has honored Dr. Lorimer Holm of Berlin with its Distinguished Service Award for 2005, the highest honor that the society can bestow on one of its members.

Dr. Holm was a radiologist in Central Vermont for 27 years, retiring in 1993. During his practice, a number of new radiological technologies were introduced which provided faster and better imaging. Dr. Holm played an active role in bringing the first CT scanner to Central Vermont, helping to convince hospital administrators and state regulators in the early 1970s that the new technology would be beneficial to patients.

Dr. Holm received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1960, and did both his residency and internship at the University of Vermont. In 1966, he moved to Montpelier and joined Associates in Radiology. He worked at Heaton Hospital in Montpelier and the Barre City Hospital before the Central Vermont Medical Center was created. He also practiced at Gifford Memorial Hospital in Randolph and Copley Hospital in Morrisville.

In 1980, Dr. Holm joined Green Mountain Radiology, which provides radiological services for patients throughout Central Vermont.

Dr. Holm has been active within the Vermont Medical Society, serving as the chairman of the Investment Committee and as treasurer of the society. His knowledge and leadership have contributed greatly to the Vermont Medical Society’s financial stability and ability to assist its member physicians.

Dr. Holm was presented with the Distinguished Service Award at the Vermont Medical Society’s 192nd Annual Meeting, held Oct. 15 at the Killington Grand Hotel in Killington.

The Distinguished Service Award is given by the Vermont Medical Society on the basis of meritorious service in the science and art of medicine and the basis of outstanding contribution to the medical profession, its organizations, and the welfare of the public.

The Vermont Medical Society represents more than 1,500 physicians licensed in Vermont. The mission of the Vermont Medical Society is to serve the public by facilitating and enhancing physicians’ individual and collective commitments, capabilities and efforts to improve the quality of life for the people of Vermont through the provision of accessible and appropriate health care services.
