Release October 14, 2006 Vermont Medical Society Awards $10,000 Scholarship to UVM College of Medicine Student
The scholarship is given each year to a medical student who is committed to practicing medicine in Vermont and caring for Vermonters. The scholarship was created to encourage young doctors to return to Vermont after completing their residency training. The scholarship was funded through generous contributions from Fletcher Allen Health Care, members of the Vermont Medical Society, and the Chittenden County Medical Society. The scholarship is named in honor of Dr. Mildred Reardon, a faculty member at the UVM College of Medicine, who was instrumental in forming the Vermont Medical Society Education and Research Foundation. It is our hope and intention, by offering this annual scholarship, to recruit medical students to practice medicine in Vermont, especially in its less-served areas, to ensure that Vermonters in all parts of the state continue to have access to excellent medical care, said Dr. Reardon. Klein is a native of Illinois and studied at DePauw University in Indiana and the University of Colorado, Boulder. He is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, and worked as a medical assistant and emergency medical technician in Colorado. At the UVM College of Medicine, Klein was elected to the Wellness Committee by his classmates, and has participated in the Smile Docs program, which brings health concepts and lessons to local elementary school classrooms. He is co-leader of the Wilderness Medicine interest group, and was the co-recipient of the B. Albert Ring Memorial Award.
