Release October 14, 2006 Vermont Medical Society Honors Dr. John Murray With Distinguished Service Award
Dr. Murray is a pediatrician at Timberlane Pediatrics in South Burlington and Burlington. As a clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, he has been a teacher and mentor to medical students and residents at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and Fletcher Allen Health Care. In addition, Dr. Murray has long been dedicated to the Special Olympics and sports medicine. For 18 years, Dr. Murray chaired the State Medical Committee for the Vermont Chapter of the Special Olympics. He also served as a member of the International Special Olympics and was the physician for the U.S. Special Olympics team at the Belgian International Games. Dr. Murray has chaired the Sports Medicine Council for the U.S. Biathlon Team and was a member of the medical advisory committee for the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. Dr. Murray has provided leadership for the Vermont medical community, serving as president of the Vermont Medical Society, a member of the VMS Council, and a delegate to the American Medical Association. He serves on the Vermont Board of Medical Practice. “Dr. Murray has distinguished himself in his outstanding accomplishments at the community, state, and national levels in clinical work, teaching, and representing the medical profession,” said Dr. Mildred Reardon of the UVM College of Medicine. “His work models the collegial and cooperative approach that is fundamental to professionalism, as well as his enthusiasm to take on responsibilities for the community at large and to exert public leadership.” Dr. Murray was presented with the Distinguished Service Award at the Vermont Medical Society’s 193rd Annual Meeting, held Oct. 14 at the Basin Harbor Club in Vergennes. The Distinguished Service Award is given by the Vermont Medical Society on the basis of meritorious service in the science and art of medicine and the basis of outstanding contribution to the medical profession, its organizations, and the welfare of the public. The Vermont Medical Society represents more than 1,500 physicians licensed in Vermont.
