Press Releases For Immediate Release VERMONT MEDICAL SOCIETY SUPPORTS NEW LAW TO CONTROL RISING DRUG COSTS MONTPELIER, VT -- The Vermont Medical Society today expressed its strong support for legislation signed into law by Governor Howard Dean, M.D. that will reduce the high cost of drugs for low-income Vermonters. "Vermont physicians recognize the serious problem created by rapidly increasing Medicaid expenditures for drugs, said Carolyn Taylor-Olson, M.D., President of the Vermont Medical Society. Early this year, the Medical Society joined with AARP and the Coalition of Vermont Elders in supporting the passage of the legislation in order to put our state pharmacy assistance programs on a sustainable basis and to ensure that our state's most vulnerable seniors continue receiving the drug benefits they so desperately need." Dr. Taylor-Olson added, "this legislation contains a number of beneficial provisions that will reduce the cost of prescription drugs and increase their availability for many Vermonters including negotiations for supplemental rebates, physician education, and appropriate use of technology to lessen administrative burdens and improve quality of care. In addition, the law's new information disclosure requirements will strengthen existing ethical guidelines and help ensure that any contributions made by drug companies are for the benefit of patients." Taylor-Olson said, "the Vermont General Assembly is to be commended for the time and effort they have spent on addressing one of the most difficult issues facing our country -- controlling the spiraling cost of prescription drugs." -30- For more information, contact: Steve Larose |
