Lewis C. Blowers, M.D.
2002 VMS Physician of the Year
Dr.
Blowers’ relationship with Copley Hospital and a small, rural community in
northern Vermont began over 35 years ago. The U.S. Army and Dartmouth trained
general surgeon knew that it would be hard for him to turn down Copley after his
recruiting visit. Copley’s administration pulled out all of the stops during his
visit, including an enormous cake, to ensure his commitment to the hospital.
Upon agreeing to come to the hospital, Dr. Blowers recognized that the path
ahead of him would not be easy. As the first general surgeon to be hired by the
hospital, he had his work cut out for him in developing the medical services
that would become an undeniably valuable resource for the community.
Throughout his 35 years of practice and being on call nearly every night, Dr.
Blowers actively recruited physicians in an effort to expand the medical
services Copley could provide. He wanted to ensure that people within the area
could be well served in the area and not be forced to travel long distances for
competent medical care. That same philosophy was applied to his work as the
hospital’s first medical director. Dr. Blowers worked hard for ten more years to
improve the quality of care provided to the patients by Copley’s medical staff.
Two years ago, Dr. Blowers decided it was time to officially retire from his
responsibilities at Copley. Although he was deeply committed to the hospital and
patients, he hasn’t regretted the decision one bit.
Between lending a hand on his son’s tree farm and serving on the board of
medical practice, Dr. Blowers continues to remain active and involved with his
community. We at the Society wish him all the best in his well deserved
retirement.
