This online Vermont Guide to Health Care Law is the result of a collaboration between the Health Law Committee of the Vermont Bar Association (VBA), the Vermont Medical Society (VMS), the Vermont Association of Hospitals and Health Systems (VAHHS), the University of Vermont College of Medicine, and the Vermont Law School. It is designed to give physicians and health care facilities a fundamental understanding of legal and regulatory requirements that affect the delivery of health care in Vermont today. The project was also designed to foster cooperation and collegiality within and between the legal and medical professions. This guide is organized so that users may readily find the information that they seek. Topics are organized in alphabetical order. Within each chapter, the question-and-answer format presents material in a manner that directly responds to frequently asked questions. We hope that the guide's readers will find this format easy to use. We are very grateful to the attorneys, physicians, and practice managers whose research, writing, and editing made this guide possible. Despite their busy schedules, they devoted many, many volunteer hours to this project. Their dedication, knowledge and experience made the guide the high quality resource that it is. We couldn’t have done it without them. We also want to thank our thoughtful content editors, Jo Ann Beatrice Fiorito Hertford, MD, FAAFP , a third-year law student at the Vermont Law School, and Donna Izor, the Vice President of Medical Group Practices and Community Health for Central Vermont Medical Center. They read and commented on chapters from their perspectives as health care professionals and we relayed their comments to the authors. Two individuals who worked behind the scenes to transform the draft chapters into the final online version of the guide also deserve recognition and thanks. Steve Larose, communications director for the Vermont Medical Society, edited and organized the copy for the guide and Stephanie Winters, VMS office and membership coordinator, designed and built the web site. Please send your comments about the guide to mmongan@vtmd.org. We hope that these 15 chapters are only the beginning and that we will be able to revise current chapters and add new ones in the future. Your insights will help us in future editions and we welcome them. Madeleine Mongan, Esq.
