6 Easy Things Physicians
Can Advise Patients to Do

1.  Let patients know Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage is available and that they should look into if it’s right for them.

2.  Encourage anyone who thinks they might be eligible to apply for the “Extra Help” limited income subsidy.
3.  Advise patients who receive a “Creditable Coverage” letter from a current insurer saying that their current prescription drug coverage is as good or better than Medicare Part D to keep that letter so that they will be exempt from penalties if they ever need to switch to Medicare drug coverage.
4.  Let Vermont pharmacy beneficiaries who are also Medicare eligible know that they have been automatically enrolled in a Part D plan and that V-Pharm will act as a wrap-around to protect their benefits.
5.  Recommend that patients get a list of all their current medications from a pharmacy and check to make sure whatever plan they consider enrolling in covers those medications (those who have been automatically enrolled in a plan should do this as well).
6.  Point patients toward resources for further assistance:
  • State Health Insurance Assistance Program
    (SHIP) at 1-800-642-5119
  • 1-800-MEDICARE
  • www.medicare.gov
